Educators have a broad knowledge base and understand the subject areas they teach.
Educators understand the curricular, conceptual and methodological foundations of education and of the subject areas they teach. Educators must be able to communicate effectively in English or French. Educators teach students to understand relevant curricula in a Canadian, Aboriginal, and global context. Educators convey the values, beliefs and knowledge of our democratic society.
Artifact
This piece of evidence is a language arts unit I taught about Aboriginal Stories. I taught this unit for six weeks in a grade 3 classroom during my final practicum. Throughout this unit, I read 15 stories to the class and we did writing/drawing activities, art projects, story retellings, and reader's theatre to accompany the stories. This unit integrated language arts, art, social studies, and science.
Insights Gained
This was one of my first experiences teaching Aboriginal understandings and perspectives. It was really great getting to teach this in a safe and welcoming environment as a student teacher and I have gained skills to teach this same unit and others integrating Aboriginal understanding in the future. I was also able to see which stories the students connected with and which they did not, for future use.

As a future educator, the BC curriculum incorporates Aboriginal understanding into all subjects; I have gained knowledge and experience to implement this into my practice. I now have a variety of resources and lesson plans to use in my future classroom and I can use them in all grades. The artifact demonstrates the role of educators in teaching students in a Canadian and Aboriginal context as well as integrating different subject areas.

Artifact
This piece of evidence is a unit that I did in a Kindergarten/Grade One class as a pre-service teacher. It is based around the book Little Bear's Vision Quest by Diane Silvey. Throughout the unit, we did lessons in art, language arts, and social studies.
Insights Gained
This unit gave me great insight on how to embed Aboriginal culture and education into my teaching practice. I am very fortunate that I was able to experience teaching a unit with this book because it has given me more confidence in weaving Aboriginal resources into my teaching practice.
Connection to Teaching Practice
This was my first experience working with Aboriginal resources and embedding them into my teaching. This unit is one that I would definitely do again, as it was a great way for the students to experience some Aboriginal culture. This artifact also demonstrates the role of educators in teaching in a Canadian and Aboriginal context.
